MINERAL (2021) Sand and resin. 38 x 38 x 41 cm
'Mineral' delves into the dualities of space archaeology and space waste, examining the contradictory nature of debris left in orbit. These objects are simultaneously seen as derelict material and artifacts of cultural significance, raising questions about how we define value and heritage beyond Earth. The sculpture juxtaposes sand, a natural, earthly substance, with resin, a synthetic material, to embody this tension. The interplay of these materials symbolizes the object as both a product of our world and a fabrication of another, evoking the intersection of the organic and the industrial, the familiar and the alien. 'Mineral' invites reflection on humanity’s evolving relationship with its technological remnants, both as markers of progress and as traces of planetary neglect.
OUT OF THE BLUE (2021) Polyurethane foam and silver leaf, 60 x 70 x 60 cm
This work explores the discarded nature of objects orbiting in outer space, the dangers they pose when falling to Earth, and the monuments they create upon impact. Reflecting on art in a public context, it raises critical questions about what we contribute to the world and for whom. With rapid advancements in space exploration and Mars habitats being constructed on Earth, the work draws attention to the 22,000 man-made objects currently littering our orbit and nearly 700 discarded items on the Moon. It challenges us to consider whether expansion into new frontiers exposes our ignorance on a larger scale and emphasises the need for conscious, purposeful contributions to the landscapes we inhabit, both on Earth and beyond.
